A Kinder Craze Birthday: Celebrating 3 Wonderful Years

Today is a day to reflect and celebrate. Three years ago, I hit “publish” on my very first blog post and in that instant, Kinder Craze was born and my life would forever change its course. Back then, Kinder Craze was just a little bitty baby blog and I was happy if 12 people stopped by visit in the course of a week. The blog design itself was created by me and I learned so much about blogging each day, there were times I thought my head would burst. At the time, I had a dream of sharing something wonderful with my readers, but I had absolutely no idea how big Kinder Craze would become or how much it would change my life. My vision was in its early infancy and I loved every moment spent working on the blog.

Maria Manore, celebrating the 3rd birthday of Kinder Craze

As I stand here today and look back upon the past three years, my heart just swells with pride. Kinder Craze has become a favorite blog among kindergarten teachers across the US and around the globe. The little shop that I opened on Teachers Pay Teachers a few years prior to the launch of Kinder Craze is now one of the top 100 grossing on the site; the blog itself has moved to an entirely different platform, complete with its own domain and a stunning professional design; and I now own the trademark to Kinder Craze.

As if that were not enough, this blog has helped me to discover a passion and a talent for photography within myself that I never knew existed.

Things have changed so much both on the blog and behind-the-scenes as life continues reveal new surprises for me each day. Despite all of the changes, some things will always remain the same. As I picked up a beautiful birthday cake and stood in front of the camera to snap a photo earlier today, I was struck by how fitting the moment was.

It was simply me and my camera, taking a photo to share with you.

And you, dear readers, have been along for the ride every step of the way. For that I am eternally grateful and I wish I could give each and every one of you a slice of my birthday cake. This day belongs to you every bit as much as it belongs to me.

I keep you in mind each time I make even the smallest decision for the blog. Whether I am selecting a new blog topic, wondering when to post new content or searching for the perfect treasure to give away; I always carefully consider my options and select the path that I believe will be the best fit for you.

Excitement is underway here at Kinder Craze. I will be married in three short months and living in a new home, which will include space for my first-ever home office. Each night I dream of the next step for Kinder Craze and I would love to hear your thoughts about the blog and the path it has taken over the past three years. What would you love to see more of? What could you do without? Is there anything currently missing from the blog that you WISH I could add?

Thank you so much for your time and dedicated following. I can’t wait to see what the next year has in store for us.

Happy Birthday, Kinder Craze!

Stained Glass Cross Lenten Craft for Kindergarten

Lent may not be the most exciting time of year, but it is one of my favorites to teach about in my kindergarten classroom. I teach in a Catholic School and we spend a significant amount of time learning about the Stations of the Cross and “the sad story of what happened to Jesus” as I describe it for my students. No matter what sad part of the story we are discussing, I always remind my children of the happy ending when Jesus was able to rise from the dead!

We remember Jesus during Lent in several ways. The children are working to do good deeds at school as well as at home. We are studying each Station of the Cross and listening to the story of each one during Lent. Tomorrow I am going to introduce Resurrection Eggs to the students and then there are the crafts. This simple stained glass cross window decoration is my favorite Lenten craft to create in the classroom. By now, my students are stained glass experts (they require very few instructions from me) and these beautiful crosses look stunning when they hang in my classroom windows. I’m thrilled to share a tutorial for this simple craft with you today.

tutorial to create "stained glass" tissue paper crosses

Materials needed

  • Two, 9×14″ sheets of clear contact paper per child
  • one cross frame cut out of black construction paper per child
  • various colors of 1″ tissue paper squares (make your own or buy pre-cut squares here)
  • scissors

To begin, peel and set one piece of clear contact paper sticky-side-up on each child’s desk. Carefully place the cross frame onto each child’s piece of contact paper (I usually do this task while the class is away from their seats – either playing with toys or while they are at a special). Place a small basket of multicolored tissue paper squares within easy reach of each child.

When the students are ready, they can begin to fill their black cross frames with the tissue paper squares. For best results, students should do this part carefully and place only one tissue paper square onto the contact paper at a time.

Once the crosses are completely filled with tissue paper squares, peel a second piece of clear contact paper and place it sticky side down on top of the cross. This “seals in” all of the tissue paper squares and prevents any fly away pieces.

Each child can trim the excess plastic from around their crosses to complete the project.

Every child’s completed cross project is completely unique and oh-so-brightly colored!

Hang the completed crosses in a window with a piece of scotch tape. It’s the perfect Lenten and Easter craft that also doubles as a springtime decoration.

I love how these crosses look hanging in the windows of my kindergarten classroom.

My 19th Stitch Fix Review – March 2015

What could possibly be better than new clothes? Answer: having a personal stylist that selects items she thinks will be perfect for you and SHIPS those items directly to your door. Sound too good to be true? It’s not! Stitch Fix is the online styling service for women and they do just that! My 19th shipment from this amazing company arrived this week and the items that my personal stylist, Layla, selected for me were as beautiful as ever. Enough talk, let’s dive right into the clothes.

The moment I opened my fix to reveal this stack of gorgeous fabrics, I knew instantly that Layla had outdone herself once again. I have some serious spring fever happening over here in Michigan right now and I just about drooled over the colors and textures that she thought would be perfect for me. Layla had definitely done her homework and scouted out My Style board on Pinterest. I couldn’t try these clothes on fast enough!

Stitch Fix Review - March 2015 #stitchfix

I have a serious color crush on peach and blush so I gravitated first toward the Gilli Airy Knit Sweater from Mak ($48).

Gilli Airy Knit Sweater from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

I loved the lightweight casual knit and I tried the sweater on with a light colored casual pair of flare leg jeans and a pair of gold sandals. The combination was so gorgeous and the color palate was like a breath of fresh air.

Gilli Airy Knit Sweater from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

I absolutely loved the color and texture of this sweater but it was just a touch too short and too boxy for me. I know people are going to leave a ton of comments telling me I should of kept the sweater. I agree that it is gorgeous and very much my style, but if a top is boxy on me, I will always talk myself out of wearing it and this sweater is way too pretty to get buried in the back of my closet.

The next item I tried on was the Pinson Drape Cardigan from Brixon Ivy ($54). Oh, my word. This is a fabulous cardigan. I’m pretty sure it came straight from fashion heaven.

Pinson Drape Cardigan from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

Any time I dress, I try to balance out the top and bottom of my outfit. One part should be fitted and the other should not be. Since this cardigan had a lot of beautiful drape, I wore it with a sequenced off-white tank and a pair of skinny jeans.

There are no words for how much I love this cardigan. It’s so feminine and the heather gray color puts an interesting casual spin on it.

My gold sandals and white ceramic Fossil watch also looked fabulous with the ensemble.

This cardigan was definitely a keeper!

Next up was the Lyla Skirt from Gili ($48). At first, I wasn’t sure what to make of this skirt. The heather gray cotton fabric put a distinctly casual spin on this item. Yet it was pleated and lined; which meant that it was good quality. I was determined to give this skirt a chance.

Lyla Skirt from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

I’m not going to lie. At first, I had no idea what to wear with the skirt. On a whim, I kept on the Pinson Drape Cardigan and just added some nude pointed toe heels. Strangely, I didn’t think it was awful. It did violate my rule of mixing fitted items and draped items on top and bottom, but it wasn’t bad. Well, the shoe color was bad. But the clothes weren’t.

Lyla Skirt from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

I dug a little deeper in my closet and decided to play it conservative with a black beaded cardigan over a white tank. I also added black patent leather heels.

Lyla Skirt from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

The ensemble was conservative, but the heather texture of the skirt added a pop of fun to the outfit . I am a faculty advisor for NJHS at my school and inductions are coming up. Last year I had the worst time selecting an outfit to wear for the event. I wanted to wear a dress and look professional. Unfortunately, all of my dresses are either formal or casual. There is no in between. Until now. I think I have the perfect skirted outfit to wear at inductions this year.

Lyla Skirt from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

The fourth item included in my fix was a Bixby Dot Print 3/4 Tab Sleeve Blouse from Pixley ($48). I Instantly fell in love with the colors and the playful print.

ixby Dot Print 3/4 Tab Sleeve Blouse from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

The blouse was simply gorgeous when I tried it on.

ixby Dot Print 3/4 Tab Sleeve Blouse from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

Much like the Gilli Airy Knit Sweater that I tried on a decided to return, this top was also a bit boxy. It didn’t look bad on me, but it did resemble a maternity top. I wasn’t trying to look pregnant in this photo, but I kind of do.

ixby Dot Print 3/4 Tab Sleeve Blouse from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

I’m so torn because I didn’t look pregnant from every angle while I wore the top and it was really beautiful (and comfortable!). I have to make up my mind soon, but I am so undecided about whether to keep or return the blouse.

ixby Dot Print 3/4 Tab Sleeve Blouse from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

What do you think I should do?

ixby Dot Print 3/4 Tab Sleeve Blouse from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

The fifth and final item included in my fix was the Vivienne Floral Print Sleeveless Blouse from Daniel Rainn ($68). I had told Layla that I was loving all things feminine (especially floral prints), but I wasn’t sold on this blouse right away. It was a little to… vibrant.  I’m drawn to soft colors right now and I was certain that this item was going right back to Stitch Fix.

Vivienne Floral Print Sleeveless Blouse from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

And then I tried it on.

And guess what?

I kind of loved it. The fabric was light and airy and the arm holes weren’t too big (a common problem for me).

Vivienne Floral Print Sleeveless Blouse from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

I also liked that the blouse was longer in the back which provided a little extra coverage.

Vivienne Floral Print Sleeveless Blouse from Stitch Fix #stitchfix

I always love to add layers so I wore a white cardigan over the blouse and it was still gorgeous.

And just like that, an unwanted blouse became a keeper.

Classroom Management Phrases for Teachers March Roundup

Hi everyone! I have a latest roundup of #kindercatchphrase expressions for classroom management. These are real expressions used in the classroom from the very best teachers in the trenches. Let’s face it. You can only ask your class to “please work quietly” so many times before they stop listening. These phrases may be little, but they are solid gold. So, without more adieu, here is the latest round of #kindercatchphrase expressions shared on Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr for the month of March.

How to Sit on the Floor

Every elementary teacher is well-versed in “crisscross applesauce” as a mantra for how students are expected to sit on the floor. The phrase gives very clear instructions on what students should do with their legs.

But what about their hands?

This #kindercatchphrase is perfect because the teacher adds the phrase “spoons in your bowls.” Students instantly know exactly what to do with their hands AND their feet!

Curbing the Tattle-Tale Problem

A minor but common management issue in virtually every elementary classroom is tattling and children worrying so much about what others in the class are doing; they neglect their own responsibilities. When this minor issue goes unaddressed for too long, it can easily become a MAJOR problem for the classroom climate.

Sometimes it is easy for the teacher to slip and indulge all of the little tattles, but doing so just creates positive reinforcement for children that tattle and the issue will persist. As often as you can, remind children that they are in charge of themselves and they only need to bring problems to your attention if someone is sick, hurt or in need of help from an adult. I love this management expression because it lets every child know exactly who they are in charge of: themselves.

When Nature Calls

Bodily functions are a normal part of life and hen you put a couple dozen young children in a room together, bodily functions are guaranteed to happen. Especially gas. Even I will admit that when the entire class is gathered together on the carpet listening attentively and one child audibly passes gas, it’s funny. The situation is humorous because it is unexpected and well, farts makes a funny sound.
(I know… I just said the F word!)

Even though those moments are humorous, I do my best not to crack a smile. Just because it’s a funny situation doesn’t mean that child isn’t embarrassed. The children in a well-managed class take their cues from the teacher. If the teacher makes a big deal out of the moment and starts laughing, so will the rest of the class. If the teacher keeps giving instructions like it’s no big deal; the other children will also treat the moment like it’s no big deal. Usually, that’s enough for the moment to pass and nothing needs to be said. On some occasions, however, someone starts to laugh and the moment gets a little too silly. This classroom management expression is perfect for those moments. It brings the situation back under control and let’s the child retain his or her dignity without making a big fuss.

Encouraging Good Choices

As teachers, we are called to shape so much more than the mind of a child. We are also instrumental in developing each student’s character and moral compass. This #kindercatchphrase expression reminds students that it is their job to make wise choices and act in an upstanding way.

Grabbing the Attention of Your Students

In a busy classroom, it can be a challenge for a teacher to get the attention of her (or his) students. For this call and response chant, “Hocus Pocus” really are magic words that set the stage for undivided attention from the class.

classroom management phrases from real teachers #kindercatchphrase

Maintaining Student Attention

Getting the class’ attention is one thing. Keeping it is something else entirely. If you have something really important that you need everyone to remain focused on, encourage the entire class to “glue their eyes to you.” Upon hearing these words, some children inevitably to through the motions of applying make-believe glue to their eyes. In those moments, you know the class is REALLY listening.

Developing a Filter

Many children young children are still developing their filter and have not yet figured out that some thoughts should be left unsaid. Actually, some adults still need to learn this lesson too. I think I may print this #kindercatchphrase and tape it right to my classroom door as a reminder for anyone that may step inside.

Promote Responsibility in the Classroom

Although it may not get much attention in the age of Common Core, one of the many duties of the teacher is to promote a sense of responsibility in all students. So many children today have SO MUCH given to them and done for them at home. I cringe each time I see a parent walking down the hall carrying their child’s backpack for them. I want to run up to that parent and say “STOP! Let him carry the backpack himself! It’s HIS backpack!

(Of course, I don’t do that because I learned the previous lesson that we discussed above)

But still. When the children are in my classroom, I am not the maid. I don’t push in their chairs, or pick up their paper scraps or tidy up the inside of their desks. Those are duties that every child in the classroom is responsible for doing on their own as members of the classroom and it should be that way in every classroom across the country. Even the youngest or most disabled learners can be responsible for something.

The Magic of Counting Down

There is something very magical about counting down in a classroom. If the teacher begins at 5 (or even 10) and slowly begins to countdown, students suddenly move faster and more quietly. It’s quite the phenomenon and it’s one of my favorite tricks to use in the classroom. For the very best effect, count down slowly and in your quietest voice. If you are calm and quiet about the countdown, your students will be too.

If I see someone start to run, I stop for a moment and pleasantly reassure them that “I’m counting slow so you have plenty of time to walk.”

Everyone Needs a Little Love Sometimes

It’s important to remember that no matter how busy our schedules may be, the children in our classroom need more than academic support from us. They also need emotional support. This blog post served as a helpful reminder that we never know exactly what is happening in the lives of our students. I give my students hugs, high-fives and gentle pats on the shoulder ALL day long, just because I may not know who is really in need of a little love that day.

classroom management phrases from real teachers #kindercatchphrase

Tell Your Class How Great They Are

If you are proud of your class, let them know it! It’s important for students to hear that they are making good choices and on the right track. Each time my class walks down the hall and displays more self-control than the other classes we pass along the way, I always let them know how proud I am. I tell my students that I have the best class in the whole school and they know that I mean every word of it.

When I shared this image on Instagram a few weeks ago, I learned something new. Apparently, studies are now showing that if you praise a child for their intelligence, they are more likely to give up when they come to a problem that is difficult to solve. Conversely, if you praise a child for their ability to problem solve and try hard, they are more likely to persevere through mentally challenging situations. So, I think I’m all done complimenting my students on their intelligence.

My Apologies for the Delay

I apologize for the delay in sharing the March #kindercatchphrase expressions this month. Wedding planning, house hunting and school responsibilities have been giving me a run for my money and I haven’t had as much time to blog. You can read all about those experiences on my personal blog :) Hopefully next month I will be able to share the #kindercatchprase quotes from April in a bit more timely manner. Thanks SO much for understanding!

As we begin to wind down the school year and prepare for summer vacation, classroom management is more important than ever. If your students are anything like mine, spring fever has kicked in and they are pretty wound up! But fear not, I have another batch of #kindercatchphrase expressions direct from the mouths of seasoned classroom teachers. Try a few of these expressions out in your classroom this week and consider it my Teacher Appreciation gift to you!classroom management expressions for teachers

Get Your Students Ready to Learn

Nothing grabs the attention of young children like a classic echo chant. I adore the simplicity of this #kindercatchphrase. It’s short, direct and implies a love of learning.

Don’t Forget to Write Your Name

Why, why, WHY is it such a challenge for children to remember to write their names on their papers? Maybe this catchy little rhyming expression will help them remember. Like all the best classroom management phrases, it puts a positive spin on a very annoying classroom problem.

classroom management expressions for teachers

You Get What You Get…

Speaking of positive expressions, the common classroom expression of “you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit” has never sat very well with me. It always struck me as a little bit edgy and negative. I positively adore this new positive twist on the old expression. As a Catholic educator, it is also a much better fit for my Christian classroom environment.

Proper Behavior For Walking Down the Hall

Young children LOVE to touch things. Especially each other. And walls. They also love to make noises. This #kindercatchphrase helps students prepare their mouths and hands for a trip down the hall. Sometimes a proper start is all it takes for a successful walk!

Keep the Line Moving at the Drinking Fountain

Ah, the drinking fountain. A source of refreshment and impatience. Especially for the poor student stuck at the end of a very long line. Keep the line moving with this simple little rhyme. It sounds much more polite for a child to say this when a particularly thirsty student is in front of him/her instead of “Come on! You’ve had enough! It’s MY turn!”
classroom management expressions for teachers

Quieting Talkative Students

Seriously, I think echo chants are pure genius. This #kindercatchphrase is another gem and I love that the student’s part is to say OUT LOUD that they are all done talking.

classroom management expressions for teachers

Ask for a Favor and Receive Anything You Need

A teacher can ask a particularly rowdy student to calm down and stop talking until she is blue in the face, usually with very little success. But often six magic words can be uttered that are capable of creating a remarkable change in the student’s behavior: Will you do me a favor?

While I’m not 100% certain why this phrase is so effective, I suspect it stems from the fact that most children inherently like their teacher and DO want to make them happy. Children just have a difficult time connecting how their behavior affects the teacher. I challenge you to try using this expression in your own classroom. Ask the entire class or perhaps just one student to please do you a HUGE favor and work quietly. Say that you really like it to be quiet so you can get your work done too. This #kindercatchphrase just might work a little magic in your classroom too!

What Do You Say?

I am always on the hunt for POSITIVE phrases that help teachers manage their classroom while showing respect for their students. If you have a great #kindercatchprase suggestion, leave a comment telling me about it. I would love to know what words have a powerful impact in your classroom!

I am SO excited to fill you in on all of the details, but first I want to show you what came in my most recent fix. Sit back and get comfy, this Stitch Fix review is a good one!

May 2015 Stitch Fix Review

The first item I tried on was this olive Patrick Cropped Chino Pant from Level 99 ($88). Right now, all of my pants are too big and saggy on me. I have been begging my stylist, Layla to send more pants my way and I was thrilled to discover these in my fix. This was the first item I reached for to try on.

Patrick Cropped Chino Pant from Level 99 - May 2015 Stitch Fix Review

Stitch Fix has successfully filled my closet with an abundance of professional clothes. But I love to dress down and go for comfort. These pants were right up my alley because they are nice enough to wear to work in my kindergarten classroom, but ideal for me to wear throughout the summer with a t-shirt.

Springtime in Michigan can bring very hot weather as well as days that are in the lower 60s. I initially paired these pants with a 3/4 sleeve relaxed top that is a favorite of mine because it’s so versatile. I love the soft colors and the instant comfort.

I had so much fun styling these pants, I am crossing my fingers and hoping for cool weather next week!

The next item in my fix was the Meryl Tulip Print Sleeveless Blouse from Pixley ($54).

Much like the chinos, the fabric of this blouse was on the casual side and could easily be dressed up for school or dressed down for a relaxed weekend. I chose to keep it relaxed and paired the top with my new olive chinos. Love, love, LOVE!

Next up was a a coral Susie Bermuda Short from Liverpool ($58). As you might guess from my otherwise conservative taste in clothes, shorts are not my favorite thing to wear. Not even bermudas. Layla probably figured this out as well. I’m certain she sent a coral pair to entice me. I have kept nearly every single coral garment she has ever sent my way.

To keep things simple, I paired the bermuda shorts with a simple white tee.

To my surprise, I liked them. I probably won’t wear these every day, but they will be perfect for outdoor school events on hot summer days. They are comfortable and very appropriate!

Item number 4 from this month’s fix was the Persia Maxi Dress from Market & Spruce ($88). Layla once again admitted that she knew I didn’t care for v-necks, but she thought it would be perfect for my upcoming honeymoon to Florida and Vegas conference this summer.

Layla was correct! I’m still not a fan of any v-necks, but this dress was gorgeous!

I added my cropped denim jacket and instantly felt more comfortable in the dress. I cannot wait to wear this ensemble later this summer.

The dress was even stunning from the back and I love the exotic print.

The final item in my fix was the Hal Crew Neck Blouse from Daniel Rainn ($68).

Hal Crew Neck Blouse from Daniel Rainn - May 2015 Stitch Fix Review

It’s difficult to tell in the above photo, but the blouse had a beautiful floral texture that reminded me of lace. There were also some interesting and unique cutouts along the neckline in the back.

Hal Crew Neck Blouse from Daniel Rainn - May 2015 Stitch Fix Review

The blouse was beautiful enough to make a statement on it’s own so I kept thing simple and paired it with a dark pair of skinny jeans and a simple gold necklace.

Hal Crew Neck Blouse from Daniel Rainn - May 2015 Stitch Fix Review

The blouse fit perfectly and the armholes were a little large, but easily managed by layering a white tank top underneath. While the cobalt blouse was beautiful, it was a little too dark for my taste. It felt wintry to me and after this past winter, I am desperate to wear as many bright, warm and light colors as I possibly can. Sadly, I opted to return this item.

The Breakdown

Here’s the complete list of everything that was included in my fix and which items I decided to keep.

How Debbie Clement Rocked My World

The Pre-K-2 students at my school were treated to a very special guest earlier this month. The one and only Debbie Clement came to our school and performed for each grade level. If you’re not already familiar with Debbie, she is also an early childhood blogger. Debbie’s blog, Rainbows Within Reach, is filled with amazing ideas, resources and inspiration for early education classroom.

A school visit and performance from the one and only Debbie Clement

But Debbie is SO much more than just a blogger. She’s also a published author. And an accomplished quilter, and a children’s book illustrator AND she is the most amazing “music lady” I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing!

Debbie also happens to be one of the most dynamically positive, upbeat people I will ever meet. We became virtual friends a few years ago and had been waiting oh-so-patiently to finally meet in real life. You may remember that my students were actually treated to a special Skype session with Debbie a few years ago.

I was overjoyed when I heard a rumor last fall that the parent organization at my school had booked the one and only Debbie Clement to share her stories and music with my students this month. It was a long time to wait, but I was very patient.( I’ve been waiting for a lot of special occasions these days.)

Let me tell you, it was worth the wait.

My students were captivated from the moment they sat down. At first, I think they were just trying to appreciate every bright detail of Debbie’s outfit. Then she started talking and they were completely entranced.

Any kindergarten teacher can attest that young children have extremely short attention spans.  My students were scheduled to be with Debbie for 50 minutes, but they were engaged for every single moment. I always worry about how my students will behave for a special guest (especially when that special guest is a personal friend of mine). In this instance, there was no need to be concerned. I could have left the room to put my feet up and enjoy a nice cup of coffee. Debbie had things completely under control.

Just look at their level of engagement!

A school visit and performance from the one and only Debbie Clement

I don’t think Debbie stopped to catch her breath the entire time. She just kept talking, singing and dancing for the kids.

A school visit and performance from the one and only Debbie Clement

She also encouraged the children to follow along with her motions.

A school visit and performance from the one and only Debbie Clement

A school visit and performance from the one and only Debbie Clement

The children did anything she asked. ANYTHING. At several points, she told them to quickly cover their eyes so they wouldn’t see the surprise prop she was going to bring out next. Every child closed their eyes and not a single person peeked!

A school visit and performance from the one and only Debbie Clement

The best part of the visit was that Debbie did so much more than sing songs and act silly. She shared her stories with the class. Her actual published stories. That’s right – my students got to meet a real, live published AUTHOR. This is huge because my students have been learning to be authors all year long and they thought it was the coolest thing ever to meet a grown up author with real, published hardcover books.

Enter to WIN 2 hardcover chidlrens books by author and illustrator Debbie Clement!

The only thing cooler than meeting a real, live author?
Meeting a real, live ILLUSTRATOR!

Debbie provided the illustrations for every page in her children’s book entitled You’re Wonderful using a very unique medium: quilts. Debbie planned and carefully stitched 16 mini-quilts to fit the content of the book, which was professionally scanned and used as the book’s illustrations. She also brought one of the quilts along with her to show my class. The kids thought it was amazing. I really love that it fought a valuable lesson about artistic mediums. Not every illustrator uses crayons or markers or paints. Anything visual can be considered art and used in a story.

A school visit and performance from the one and only Debbie Clement

As if meeting this awesome author and seeing the quilt she used as an illustrator in person wasn’t cool enough; things got even better for my students because the text in You’re Wonderful are actually lyrics to a song. And the CD just so happens to be included in the cover of the book. So my students were able to sing along with the words of the book. AH-MAZ-ING!

Debbie also brought along a copy of a different singable story that she wrote: Tall Giraffe. Ever the entertainer, Debbie even put on a silly costume and transformed into a giraffe while she shared this story with my students.

A school visit and performance from the one and only Debbie Clement

Hardcover Book and CD Giveaway

Before Debbie left my school to make the long drive home, I pulled her aside and asked if I could please give away a copy of her two wonderful books to a Kinder Craze fan. Luckily, Debbie thought it was a great idea and happily agreed to collaborate for a giveaway. One lucky fan will win a hardcover copy of You’re Wonderful and Tall Giraffe to add to their classroom libraries. Both books come with an accompanying CD so you can sing along to the story with your students.

Big News from Kinder Craze and Astrobrights!

Big things are happening at Kinder Craze and I am so excited to finally fill you in on one of my most-exciting collaborations yet. I am proud to become a member of the Astro Bright Minds team for Astrobrights® Papers. As a member of the team, I have the opportunity to provide feedback to Astrobrights about what teachers NEED for the classroom and how educators use their gorgeous papers.

Astro Bright Minds logo

Additionally, as a member of Astro Bright Minds, I will serve as an ambassador to the 2015 Colorize Your Classroom contest. You may recall that I teamed up with Astrobrights® Papers last summer to help spread the word about their Colorize Your Classroom Contest. I was honored to help inspire so many educators to embrace more color and creativity in their classrooms and I am delighted to help Astrobrights share even more colors in a really BIG way!

Astrobrights logo

Myself and the other ambassadors will help launch the program and share how you can participate for your chance to win a yearlong sponsorship from Astrobrights. I am so excited for you to meet the other members of the Bright Minds team, as well as many other wonderful bloggers that are working to share ideas and inspiration this summer. You will definitely find some familiar names and faces and I can’t wait for everyone to introduce themselves in the coming weeks!

The Astro Bright Minds team will be working with many of your favorite education bloggers to share ideas to enhance your classroom and promote creative learning throughout the school year. We can’t wait to share all of the details with you in the near future.

Incorporating Color into My Classroom

Summer is the perfect time to start planning your classroom improvements. I love surfing Pinterest for classroom inspiration and I am always drawn to bright colors. If you are looking for some fun ways to incorporate more color into your own classroom, you have come to the right place!

If your school is anything like mine, it has a ton of old, ugly, beat up file cabinets. I gave two of the nastiest file cabinets we had in storage a fresh new look with the help of some yellow spray paint. My classroom instantly became so much more special and cheerful!

bright yellow spray painted file cabinets in a kindergarten classroom

Adding a pop of spray paint is one of the easiest ways to liven up your classroom accessories and creative a cohesive, colorful look. I rounded up a few of my favorite spray paint colors and shared them in this blog post.  The colors look stunning next to my Classroom Rules Subway Art.

Screen-Shot-2014-04-03-at-10.00.22-PM

Of course, bright colors don’t have to be purely decorative. As a creative educator, I find ways to make color an important visual prompt for student resources as well. Last year I used Astrobrights cardstock to create gorgeous, simple sight word flash cards for my students. You can easily create a set of these too. Just download my free printable sight word labels.

FREE printable sight word flashcards

Coordinating flash cards were also added to my classroom word wall. I can’t tell you how many times last year I was able to help a student easily find a specific sight word on our word wall by saying “it’s the green one” or “it’s the pink one next to the letter T.”

brightly colored kindergarten alphabet word wall

Color is an incredibly motivating aspect of any space designed for children. My classroom library is bursting with vibrant boxes for storing books. The boxes are labeled and the books are easily sorted into the proper bins. My students adore this section of the classroom and I think it’s because they feel so comfortable and at-home among the sea of colors. It creates enthusiasm for reading.

beautiful kindergarten classroom library!

With my great love of incorporating bright colors in the classroom, it’s no wonder why I love Astrobrights and am so excited to partner with them as an ambassador for this year’s Colorize Your Classroom contest.

Capture Summer Memories – HUGE Camera Giveaway

Today is the first official day of summer and I have something VERY special up my sleeve to share with you. If you are a regular visitor at Kinder Craze, you probably know about my interest in photography. Actually, it’s more than just an interest. It has become my favorite form of creative expression. I love bringing my camera to family events and capturing memories. I also enjoy bringing my camera into the classroom (and I’m pretty sure the classroom parents love it too). Today I am partnering with some of my favorite teacher-bloggers to bring you an incredible giveaway with all of my favorite photography tools. This is one giveaway you do NOT want to miss!

The Camera Kit

Let’s get right down to it and talk about these amazing prizes and why I love them so much. First up, the camera. We are giving away a Canon T5 camera kit that comes with an 18-55mm lens. I’m sure that’s a whole bunch of foreign language to you so I’ll try and make it really simple. I personally use a Canon T3i camera, which is no longer manufactured. This camera is newer than my own personal camera. In most circles, we call that better. It also comes with a standard zoom lens, which allows you to zoom in and get a closer look at your subject, and it also zooms out to become a wide angle lens.

71tz63oxXqL._SL1500_

As I type this, I am returning home from my honeymoon in Naples, Florida (I got married last week, can you believe it?!? You can read more about that here.) My husband and I brought the camera to Florida with this and pretty much used this lens nonstop. It’s great for capturing scenery or a couples photo on the go.

81xlQUzJQFS._SL1500_

Our hotel room had a gorgeous view of the Gulf of Mexico and we used this lens to photograph the sunset every single night. Here is one image that we grabbed early on in the trip. I didn’t edit this photo at all. This is how it looked straight out of the camera using the lens included in the kit.

The 50mm Bonus Lens

As if that wasn’t enough, we are also giving away a BONUS 50mm lens. This lens doesn’t zoom but it is my absolute favorite lens for capturing special moments! It has a maximum aperture of f1.8 (which is the technical way of saying that it can create a wonderfully blurry and artistic looking background). Use this lens to snap a few photos and people will be so impressed with your photographic abilities.

71BuU2ZyOeL._SL1500_

We went out to the Naples Pier one evening and I handed my camera to a friendly stranger to snap a photo of Rob and I. That’s right. This photo was taken by a stranger on the pier. Notice how the background is blurred and even though you know there are people behind us, you don’t see them clearly and they don’t distract you from the subject of the photo. That’s the magic of this lens. Had we taken this photo on my iPhone, you would have seen the people behind us as clearly as my husband and I. Once again, this image was not edited one bit.

The Missy Mint Camera Bag

Every great camera deserves a good-quality camera bag to keep your equipment safe on-the-go. My own camera bag is a Jo-Tote and I get compliments on it ALL the time. Usually, women just tell me they like my purse. They have no idea that it’s a camera bag. Every bag in the Jo-Totes collection serves as a great accessory. Just because a bag is used to carry gear, doesn’t mean it can’t be stylish! The lucky winner of this giveaway will also receive a free Missy Mint bag from Jo-Totes.

Screen Shot 2015-06-20 at 2.42.40 PM

I have been eyeing this bag online and I really want a new one for myself. I adore the soft mint color. And just look at all the space inside. You can hold a lot of lenses and equipment in addition to your camera and the front pockets are perfect for storing keys and other personal items.

June Stitch Fix Review and Giveaway #23 – I Kept It All!

Now that the frenzy of my wedding and honeymoon have calmed down, summer has arrived and I am ready to bolster my wardrobe with some new fashions! My 23rd shipment from Stitch Fix arrived this week and it was SO amazing, I decided to keep every item in my fix! You’ll want to read all the way to the end of this post because I’m also giving away a $20 Stitch Fix gift card!

June 2015 Stitch Fix Review and Giveaway #stitchfix #fashion

My husband, Rob, and I are slowly settling into our condo and you will notice a change of scenery for these photos. The extra bedroom that we intend to use for our shared office gets the best lighting, so I propped up my mirror in that room and started shooting! The room is currently empty as we wait for our custom desk/workspace to arrive so it will be interesting to watch our office take shape in the coming months. But I digress. Let’s get into this Stitch Fix review!

June 2015 Stitch Fix Review and Giveaway #stitchfix #fashion

The first item included in my fix was a Deena Crochet Back Blouse from Daniel Rainn ($68). I felt inclined to take a risk with the blouse when I tried it on so I mixed prints and initially paired it with the Walt Striped Skirt from 41Hawthorn ($68) that came in my 5th fix. They actually looked pretty great together!

Daniel Rainn Deena Crochet Back Blouse and 41Hawthorn Walt Striped Skirt from Stitch Fix #stitchfix #fashion

I don’t often wear skirts (I greatly prefer dresses over separates) so I paired the blouse with a pair of Sophie skinny jeans from Kensie ($88) that came in my 4th fix. I still wear these jeans all the time and they looked great with the blouse.

Daniel Rainn Deena Crochet Back Blouse with Kensie Sophia skinny jeans from Stitch Fix #stitchfix #fashion

I have been asking my stylist, Layla to try and find more blouses with smaller arm holes (I really dislike the giant armholes that often come with sleeveless blouses.) This particular top was perfect. No giant armholes here!

Daniel Rainn Deena Crochet Back Blouse with Kensie Sophia skinny jeans from Stitch Fix #stitchfix #fashion

The crochet detail on the back of the blouse was also quite beautiful. I paired it with the layering cami that was included with the floral blouse from my most recent fix. The ivory cami provided a beautiful contrast with the navy blue crochet. I also adore the fact that the blouse is slightly longer in the back to provide a little extra coverage.

Layla also included a beautiful coral Martina Slub Knit Open Cardigan from Pixley ($48). She had previously sent a very similar dark green cardigan in my 16th fix, but the color didn’t suit me and I really wanted to brighten up my wardrobe. I was overjoyed to see this bright and happy cardigan included in this fix. Coral is one of my favorite colors to wear and this cardigan will be perfect to have at school on the days that they blast the AC in my classroom. It also happened to look pretty great with the Deena Crochet Back Blouse.

Quick story! See my sandals in the photo below? I bought them for my wedding dress and it killed me to keep them locked up in the closet without being able to wear them so I actually slipped them on for my 20th Stitch Fix post as a little hint toward the wedding. I didn’t say anything about it in my blog post, but it was a fun little “Easter Egg” for my readers.

I don’t tend to wear a lot of blouses on the weekends, but I still like to look nicer than just wearing a t-shirt and jeans so I paired the cardigan with a tried-and-true tank that I purchased at Old Navy a few years ago. This made for a wonderful weekend look.

The third item in my fix was a yellow Sicily Pintuck Detail Silk blouse from Daniel Rainn ($78). I am such a sucker for yellow. I own very few yellow clothing items, but it is one of my favorite colors. (I love it so much that I once owned a yellow car and loved driving it all over town).

The blouse looked great with my Sophie Skinny Jeans from Kensie.

yellow Daniel Rainn Sicily Pintuck Detail Silk blouse with Kensie brand Sophia skinny jeans - June 2015 Stitch Fix Review #stitchfix #fashion

The blouse was a little plain and I needed something to break up the color and add contrast to my outfit. The 4th item in my fix was perfect for this! Layla included a Callie White Denim Jacket from Kut From the Kloth ($78) in this month’s box. I already own a small collection of blue denim jackets, but I don’t have a white one! This jacket was perfect.

yellow Daniel Rainn Sicily Pintuck Detail Silk blouse and Callie White Denim Jacket from Kut From the Kloth with Kensie brand Sophia skinny jeans - June 2015 Stitch Fix Review #stitchfix #fashion

I love how the jacket is slightly cropped and had a nice tailored fit. It will pair nicely with my maxi dresses throughout the warm summer months.

The fifth and final item included in my fix this month was a navy and white Colibri Sleeveless Top from Market & Spruce ($44).

Colibri Sleeveless Top from Market & Spruce with Kensie brand sophia skinny jeans - June 2015 Stitch Fix Review #stitchfix #fashion

At first I wasn’t really sure what to think. I loved the idea of the blouse, but look at the arm holes. It was also really long. and needed to be jazzed up somehow. I tried adding a belt, but that really didn’t do any favors for my figure. Not wanting to give up on what could be a great layering piece, I swapped my jeans for a pair of fitted white capris and added a mint cardigan. Big improvement!

Colibri Sleeveless Top from Market & Spruce with white denim capri pants and a mint cardigan - June 2015 Stitch Fix Review #stitchfix #fashion

The look was a little on the baggy side, but it was something I could see myself wearing on a more casual day. It’s too bad I don’t sail because something about this ensemble really made me want to go sailing.

Colibri Sleeveless Top from Market & Spruce with white denim capri pants and a mint cardigan - June 2015 Stitch Fix Review #stitchfix #fashion

I still sensed that this blouse still had untapped potential so I dug way back in my closet to my winter clothes and found a basic gray sweater. The sweater is actually a Michael Kohrs item that I snagged a great deal on at TJMaxx over a year ago and always seemed a little plain to me. I put it on over the blouse and WOW. I think I found the perfect use for it!

Now I really want to go sailing! Who wants to take me out on their boat?

#25DaysofColor with Astrobrights (and Freebies!)

July has arrived and I am already thinking about my classroom design for the fall. ESPECIALLY how I can incorporate color into my classroom, since color can make learning a more fun and impactful experience. Fortunately, Astrobrights Papers has a wide array of colors (25 to be exact) that are perfect for the classroom. Today is the official launch of #25DaysofColor – a summer celebration featuring the entire Astrobrights paper line, led by your favorite teacher-bloggers. For 25 days, Astrobrights Papers will feature a project using a different color of its paper, providing ideas and inspiration on how you #ColorizeYourClassroom. Each day, you can discover a classroom project, idea or tip featuring a specific Astrobrights color.

#25DaysofColor with Astrobrights - just in time for back to school!

Today’s inspiration is all about Lift-Off Lemon. When I first laid eyes on this paper, all I could think was, “Wow, that is really BRIGHT!” I personally love the color yellow and have incorporated it into my classroom in many ways (most notably when I spray painted my file cabinets).

Astrobrights Lift Off Lemon paper

Lift Off Lemon has a personality all its own and I had so much fun thinking of ways to get playful with the color as I prepare for students to enter my classroom this fall. It’s always fun to welcome students with a small gift or trinket with they first walk in the door. I stopped by FiveBelow this summer and found a great deal on 4″ glow sticks that I knew would be the perfect compliment to this bright yellow color.

The completed project is a fun printed tag that’s affixed to a glow stick. The tag reads, “We’re Going to Have a BRIGHT Year in Kindergarten!”

FREE gift tags for back to school

These little gifts were SO easy to make! All you need is a pack of Lift Off Lemon cardstock or paper (I prefer the durability of cardstock), some double sided tape and glow sticks. This pack of 10 glow sticks only cost $4!

make your own gift tags for back to school - FREEBIE and instructions!

To create this simple gift, just print off some gift tags, cut to separate and use the double sided tape to affix a glow stick onto each card. These glow sticks came with lanyards so I tied the lanyards around the top of each stick to manage the cord.

FREE gift tags for back to school

The best part? These sweet printable tags are FREE to download! I created several different pages, so that all elementary teachers (K-5) can print the page that’s best for their students. Click here to download your freebie!

FREE gift tags for back to school

These sweet student gifts were so fun to create, but I was still inspired by Lift Off Lemon and all of it’s glorious brightness; so I kept on thinking and creating.

Those first few days of school are brutal. Especially in kindergarten. My students aren’t permitted to touch anything until they know the appropriate procedures and it takes a LONG time to teach all of those essential procedures. But I need my students to do something while I take attendance and the early finishers need an activity that keeps them occupied while the rest of the class completes their work.

Luckily, students of all ages seem to be mesmerized by the novelty of dry erase markers. Traditional student whiteboards can be expensive so I created my own write and wipe surface using Lift Off Lemon as the backdrop. I also had some fun continuing to play with the brightness of the color by including the message “I’ve Got a BRIGHT Idea!” on the bottom of the writing surface.

FREE write & wipe printable that you can laminate and turn into a dry-erase surface

Creating this dry-erase mat was simple! I created the bright idea message and printed it onto a sheet of Lift of Lemon cardstock or paper then laminated the sheet using my Scotch personal laminator. My school has a commercial laminator that doesn’t make for a very good dry-erase surface but the laminating pockets I use at home are perfect for write and wipe activities!

You can download a FREE copy of this printable write and wipe page. Just print, laminate, hand your students a dry-erase marker and go! I chose to print 2 sheets per page, but a full-page option is also included in the download.

FREE write & wipe printable that you can laminate and turn into a dry-erase surface

And there you have it! Two great ideas for how you can use Lift Off Lemon from Astrobrights as you welcome students into the classroom for a new school year.

#25DaysofColor with Astrobrights - just in time for back to school!

The fun doesn’t stop here! There are still 24 amazing days to collect inspiration on how you can Colorize Your Classroom with Astrobrights Papers. You will find two more days of color inspiration from me by following Kinder Craze on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The remaining 22 days of color will be shared by my teacher-blogging friends. I can’t wait to see what everyone has in store!

Video Tutorial: Decorative Vinyl Trees for the Classroom

It’s mid-July and teachers are beginning to dream, shop and set up for their classroom setup. After reading about my kindergarten classroom, countless readers have requested  more information on how I created the black trees that are displayed on my classroom walls. Today I am happy to answer all of your most-common questions and share a video tutorial to guide you through the process!

how to create vinyl trees to decorate your classroom walls

how to create vinyl trees to decorate your classroom walls

What Are the Trees Made Of?

The trees are not made of paper and they are not painted onto the walls. Rather, they are constructed out of vinyl. You can purchase sheets of black vinyl online, but mine came from Jo-Ann. I prefer to purchase them from Jo-Ann simply because they sheets are not sold in rolls. Jo-Ann lays them flat on a rack and the unrolled vinyl is much easier to work with when it’s not trying to curl up on you.

how to create vinyl trees to decorate your classroom walls

Why Vinyl?

I knew I wanted to add trees to my classroom walls, and I carefully debated the best decorative way to add them to my walls. Paint was out of the question. My principal allows me to do many things in my classroom, but asking to paint giant black  trees on my wall would have been asking for too much! I also considered paper, but I didn’t want to risk having the paper fall down mid-year. Most of the walls are cinder block and while I have a pretty high success rate with creations sticking to my wall, I didn’t want to risk having giant trees fall off the wall mid-year. Vinyl was a natural choice for a long-lasting, non-permanent solution. It also would completely adhere to the wall and lay flat, unlike paper which would only stick in the places that had adhesive attached.  The result was a smooth, polished look that everybody thought was paint!

Did I Use a Stencil Or a Template?

Not really! I constructed the trees as I went, beginning with the trunk. The sheets of vinyl I used were 12×18″ and they were the perfect size for constructing the trunk. The trees in my classroom used 2-3 sheets of vinyl for the trunk. From there, I created triangular offshoots from the trunk to be the branches of the tree, and smaller triangles were attached as twigs on each branch. There is no perfect method and I made plenty of mistakes along the way. Each time I placed a section of vinyl that I didn’t like, I simply peeled it off and moved the piece to a different area of the tree. The vinyl is very forgiving of mistakes and I often put several small pieces together to build a larger section.

Why I Love Stitch Fix

Stitch Fix is an online styling service for women that delivers clothes directly to my door. Getting started was easy. I signed up online and created a FREE style profile. The process took about 10 minutes and was an opportunity to share my size information and personal clothing taste. No details are too trivial. For example, my own style profile explains that I like dresses with long hemlines, I prefer skinny jeans to other denim styles, I dress casual most of the time, I have long arms and I generally dislike anything with a v-neck. I also set price limits for different types of clothes in my style profile (my philosophy for purchasing accessories is “the cheaper the better”, but I’m willing to pay $200 for a fabulous new coat.)

stitch fix box

After I completed my style profile, I paid $20 to schedule my very fist fix and was paired with a personal stylist who studied my style profile and hand-picked 5 items she thought would be perfect for me. The items were shipped directly to my door (shipping is free) and I was able to try them on in the comfort of my home. I kept the items I loved, checked out online, and returned the remaining items in the pre-paid shipping envelope that was included in my fix. (Returns are free too.) The best part was that the $20 styling fee was deducted from the price of my order. I was hooked on Stitch Fix right from the start and I have loved every shipment from them that has come my way. Sign up for Stitch Fix today and make sure you enter the giveaway, because this one is too amazing to miss!

This post contains affiliate links. Thank you so much to everyone who has signed up using my link. It helps to offset the cost of my own fixes so I can keep sharing photos of the contents with all of you!

A Peek Inside The Bright Minds Summit with Astrobrights

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed that my feed got a little more vibrant than usual last week. You may have also noticed a few familiar faces. And you were probably wondering what I was up to! I am so excited for finally share the story of my trip with you today! I also have a little inside information about this year’s Colorize Your Classroom Challenge from Astrobrights paper. Trust me, you definitely want to be “in the know” about this event!

Astro Bright Minds summit 2015

Before I dive in too deep with my adventures last week, I’ll share a little of the backstory about how I ended up at such a colorful 3-day summit. Several months ago, I was contacted by Astrobrights Papers to become a member of the inaugural Astro Bright Minds team. Astrobrights loves teachers and is always looking for new ways to support educators. They reached out to a few teacher-bloggers to help them brainstorm and spread the word about their Colorize Your Classroom program. I was honored to be selected for this year’s Bright Minds Team along with Marsha from Differentiated Kindergarten and Reagan from Tunstall’s Teaching Tidbits.

Astro Bright Minds Logo

The three of us have been talking extensively with the Astrobrights team for several months via email and conference calls. We helped launch this year’s #25DaysofColor Campaign to provide ideas and inspiration for how teachers can incorporate color into their classrooms. There were lots of freebies from many other fabulous teacher-bloggers thrown in along the way too!

#25DaysOfColor inspiration from Astrobrights

Astrobrights has BIG plans for this year’s Colorize Your Classroom Challenge and they flew Marsha, Reagan and I to their headquarters in Atlanta for the first-ever Bright Minds Summit so we could collaborate with them. I had no idea how amazing those three days would be! From the moment my flight landed, I was greeted with the most sincere southern hospitality. There were colorful surprises left in my room at Hotel Indigo each day and we were treated to the most amazing meals and incredible experiences.

Atlanta postcard

The fun kicked off with dinner on Wednesday night. We walked over to Livingston restaurant, which is located in the Georgian Terrace Hotel. The hotel itself was STUNNING and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dinner was delicious and the company was amazing! Here you can see two of the summit’s masterminds: Blair and Jeremy with us.

And of course, I was in the company of some incredibly talented educators!

Maria Manore, Reagan Tunstall and Marsha McGuire

The three of us gathered the next morning in the lobby at Hotel Indidgo  awoke the next morning for a quick dose of caffeine before we set out for the day’s adventures.

From there, we headed out to the most amazing breakfast at Sun in My Belly. The whimsical, artisan atmosphere was the perfect setting for the summit’s Creativity Day.

All of the gorgeous decorations were created with Astrobrights paper by Joni from LayBabyLay. She is just as fabulous and incredible in person as she appears in this photo!

Creativity Day began like all amazing days should … with a delicious breakfast! First we feasted; then we learned a little bit more about Astrobrights and their parent company, Neenah Paper. The Astrobrights team was also very curious about our lives and struggles as educators. They want to make our jobs easier and it was refreshing to hear so much sincere appreciation for the teaching community.

After breakfast and our morning chat, it was time to get creative! The tabletop display was almost to pretty to touch. Almost …

We may have gotten a little side-tracked and had an impromptu lesson in how to create the beautiful paper flowers that adorned our creative space.  I’m going to have to file that information away for a spring event at school.

It really was a wonderful morning!

We stayed at Sun in my Belly for lunch and then headed out on our afternoon excursion: a trip to the Georgia Aquarium complete with a Behind the Seas facility tour. (Did you catch that little pun?) While on the tour, we saw the on-site veterinary offices, some of the water pumps and where the animals’ food is prepared each day. One of the most interesting stops on the tour was having a view of the pool where the whale sharks and manta rays live. It was amazing to have a birds-eye view of those creatures swimming.

Georgia Aquarium

After the tour, we were treated to the Penguin Encounter experience. We saw a penguin up close and and were even able to pet it. AMAZING. From there, we visited several exhibits and took in the scenery. It was breathtakingly beautiful.

Reagan, Marsha, and I also had fun taking photos of each other.

Of course we needed a selfie!

Friday was the third and final day of the Bright Minds Summit and it certainly felt like the grand finale. We spent the day at Lionstar Films. The studio had the word “CREATE” displayed on an exposed brick wall in giant marquee letters. It was definitely a great place to get the creative juices flowing.

CREATE marquee letters

As if Astrobrights hadn’t done enough for us already, the Bright Minds team was treated to some early-morning professional development. As an entrepreneur, there are few things I love more than talking about business. Having a round-table discussion with people that actually have a degree in the field and two top-notch educational bloggers felt like heaven!

Astro Bright Minds summit 2015

Our professional development session was followed by a round of hair and makeup for each of us.

Astro Bright Minds summit 2015

Next came a photo shoot. The amateur photographer in me ate up every moment of the experience. I was fascinated by their entire setup and all my mirror selfie experience helped me to easily feel at ease in front of the camera.

Astro Bright Minds summit 2015Astro Bright Minds summit 2015

The final task of the day was a round of video recordings in front of a gigantic green infinity screen. This task was definitely beyond my previous experience level but I loved it.

Astro Bright Minds summit 2015

I’m sure you’re wondering why on earth we were taking such professional-quality photos and videos. I can’t give away too many secrets quite yet, but I can let you know that it was all in preparation for this year’s Colorize Your Classroom Challenge. Astrobrights has BIG plans for this year’s challenge and they are planning a truly awesome launch. I am SO excited for you to find out more. Keep an eye on their Facebook page and mark your calendar for August 24!

Colorize Your Classroom

After a very long and completely wonderful day, I said goodbye to the Astrobrights team and headed for the airport. When I arrived in Detroit on Friday evening, I was exhausted, but exhilarated. My trip to Atlanta for the Bright Minds Summit shattered all of my expectations. I thought I was going to help a company prepare for it’s upcoming campaign. Instead, I became friends with a wonderful team of brilliant people who truly have teachers in mind every step of the way. I gained new insight into my own blog (which will help me continue to make Kinder Craze better for all of you readers), and I left my impression on the upcoming Colorize challenge. I’d say it was a great trip!

No wonder I can’t stop smiling :)

A huge THANK YOU goes out to Jeremy, Blair, Lauren, Jamie, Connie, Sarah, Jessica, Joni, Ryan and Chris from Lionstar and the ever-talented Zoe. My mind is officially blown and it’s all because of you.

Erin Condren Life Planner Double Giveaway!

A few months ago, I shared an Instagram photo of the best mail day ever. My Stitch Fix box arrived on the same day as my new Erin Condren Life Planner. So many people wanted a peek at my planner and had such a genuine enthusiasm for Erin Condren’s organizational products, I couldn’t help but share a peek into my newest planner. Since Kinder Craze readers love Erin Condren as much as I do, I’m giving away two Erin Condren Life Planners. But first, I have pretty photos to share with you.

I declare this to be an amazing mail day! @erincondren @stitchfix #erincondren #stitchfix #bestmailever

A photo posted by Maria Manore Gavin (@kindercraze) on

If you are new to the world of Erin Condren, let me be the first to introduce you! It’s an online company that creates the most beautiful home and organizational products. The Erin Condren Life Planner is my favorite product. A box this pretty can only mean one thing: great things are inside!

Erin Condren box

I opened the box and was greeted by this reminder to spend my time doing what I love. At this moment, I am sitting in my home office, working on a blog post and organizing a giveaway for YOU with photos I captured with my own camera. Creating is what makes me happy and this little yellow card just gave me a reminder of that fact!

Erin Condren Life Planner Unboxing

I unwrapped the tissue paper to reveal my new Limited Edition rose gold Life Planner. I’m pretty much obsessed with anything rose gold at the moment so I was beyond excited to see that Erin would be offering a Life Planner in this metallic finish (sad news… the rose gold Life Planner is now out of stock).

rose gold edition Erin Condren Life Planner

This year, Erin Condren offered ready-to-ship Life Planners when the latest set was released. The company specializes in personalized products, but they had a huge batch of these planners pre-printed with a simple, but lovely cover. My “generic” life planner came with a promo code inside for me to order a personalized alternate cover at a later date for free. I’ve been so busy, I haven’t had time to order a new cover yet. But when the starter cover looks this gorgeous, there isn’t really a need to hurry! Every Life Planner comes with a translucent vellum page inside the cover. Mine had rose gold accents. Swoon!

Behind the vellum is a cover sheet with blank lines for me to write my name.

Inspirational messages are dispersed throughout the planner. This reminder to “Make the Days Count” was right at the beginning.

A planning page is also included near the front of my Life Planner. I am a very goal-oriented person so these two pages are perfect for recording my monthly goals. You could also use the space for recording lists, birthdays, important contact information or anything that you may need to reference in a hurry!

What I love most about this planner are the tabs. Each month is marked with a tab so you can quickly turn to a 2-page spread of any monthly calendar with minimal effort. The tabs are laminated and very durable! I have had an Erin Condren Life Planner for the past 2 years and I have never had a tab rip, bend or get beat up in any way.

Each 2-page calendar layout is followed by weekly layouts, which include a column for each day as well as a section for writing notes.

A blank, lined page appears at the end of each monthly set along with a new inspirational quote for the next month’s journey.

I use this little folder to hold all sorts of goodies, especially coupons and receipts.

The little salmon-colored book is a perpetual calendar that was included in my Erin Condren Life Planner free of charge. It’s a great tool for recording birthdays, anniversaries and other annual events so I don’t forget them from year to year.

August Stitch Fix Review and Giveaway (#25)

My latest arrival from Stitch Fix arrived this week just in time to get me in the spirit for going back to school. I’m excited to share my 25th Stitch Fix review on the blog today. I’m also giving away a $20 Stitch Fix gift card! Give yourself a few minutes to enjoy the eye candy, pin your favorite items on Pinterest and enter the giveaway at the bottom of this post.

August Stitch Fix Review

The first item I tried on was the Lauri Distressed Boyfriend Jean from Just Black ($78). I had recently added a distressed jean to my style board on Pinterest with the comment that it’s not my usual taste but I wanted to experiment with a new look. My stylist, Layla, obliged and sent this denim item. I wanted to create a soft look with the jeans so I wore them with a basic pale pink t-shirt and my ballerina pink Tieks.

Yes, my shoes really are as comfortable as everyone says!

ballerina pink tieks

The jeans looked terrific and fit almost perfectly. Unfortunately, the waistband had a little extra room in the back. They were fine for trying on, but I know from past experience that when pants are too big around the waist in the back, they get really saggy and I am constantly hiking them up. Sadly, I chose to return these jeans even though they looked great.

The next item I tried on was a black pair of  Siena Cropped Pant from Kut from the Kloth ($58). I desperately need more pants in my closet so I was eager to try this pair on. They fit perfectly!

black Siena Cropped Pant from Kut from the Kloth- Stitch Fix

I wore the pants with a fun geometric print sleeveless blouse and the Callie White Denim Jacket from Kut From the Kloth ($78) that came in my 23rd fix. The ensemble was very comfortable to wear and will be perfect for back to school.

The third item I tried on was the fuchsia Walden V-Neck Blouse from Fun2Fun ($44). It was a beautiful color with a great price tag so I was immediately intrigued.

The first thing I noticed when I tried on the blouse was the armholes. They were an appropriate size! So many sleeveless blouses have giant armholes, that this one was refreshing to try on. It’s hard to come by a nice sleeveless blouse with armholes that are small enough not to hang down too much.

uchsia Walden V-Neck Blouse from Fun2Fun

The blouse looked great on it’s own with a pair of tailored gray dress pants. I often get cold while I’m at school so I added a black and white cheetah print cardigan from Old Navy. (They always have the best prices on basic cardigans.) The fuchsia blouse provided the perfect pop of color to an otherwise monochrome color scheme and I loved it.

Item number four was a navy blue Margerie Stripe & Dot Open Cardigan from Market & Spruce ($68). This item just screamed “fall” to me so I dug into my closet and pulled out my brown riding boots. I also wore the Sophia Skinny Jeans from Kensie that I received in my 4th fix.

The cardigan was interesting because it had two different designs in the fabric. The outside was stripes, but the lining was polka dots. This made for a very cool and interesting drape in the front and I loved the contrast. Ultimately I decided to return the cardigan because it was just a little too baggy on me. Had it been the slightest bit more tailed, it would have been a keeper! People ask all the time about my boots and want to know what brand they are. The boots are from Enzo Angiolini. I purchased them a few years ago and haven’t seen the same style recently, but you can find a similar pair here.

The fifth and final item that came in my Stitch Fix box was a floral Ruby Maxi Dress from Fate ($74). My stylist, Layla, said she sent it to me because of a pin she saw on my Pinterest style board. Layla admitted that she knew it was not my usual style but she encouraged me to try the dress on anyways because it would be perfect for a date night.

floral Ruby Maxi Dress from Fate

At first I couldn’t figure out why she thought I might not like this dress. It was beautiful and I am going through a huge floral phase right now. I tried the dress on an quickly realized why Layla encouraged me to be open minded. The chiffon outer layer of the dress was very sheer. Instead of a typical dress lining, it had a short skirt underneath and a long slit on each side. If you look carefully in the photos, you can kind of see the short skirt. It falls right at the bottom of the butterfly’s wings.

I also quickly discovered another reason why Layla was trying to convince me to keep an open mind. The dress tied shut in the back. There were no buttons, snaps or even a zipper. Just an elastic waist, 10 inches of an open slit, and a tie closure at the top. I wore a nude strapless bra and thought “this should be interesting!” To my surprise, the slit in the back remained well-closed the entire time I wore the dress. Occasionally, the slit opened slightly to reveal a tiny peek at my back but it wasn’t any more controversial than when a bra strap peeks it’s way out while I’m wearing a tank top.

Wearing my hair down added even more modesty in the back.

I wore this dress around my condo for quite some time while I debated whether or not to keep it. I loved how drapey and feminine it is and while my husband and I may not have a lot of dressy date nights, we do have a wedding to attend next weekend. As it turned out, the tie-back didn’t bother me at all, but the long slits on the sides were not my favorite, the skirt underneath was a little short for me, and I wasn’t a huge fan of the butterflies that were included on the floral print. It was a tough decision, but I ultimately decided to return the dress. It’s probably for the best because I was a little nervous about wearing a dress that was even remotely white to a wedding.

Brand New Tieks for Back to School GIVEAWAY

Back to school season is upon us once again. Many teachers are already back in the classroom with their students, while others (like myself) are still setting up and awaiting the arrival of our new class in the coming weeks. Regardless of our personal experiences at the moment, one thing remains the same for all teachers during this time of year: the need for comfortable shoes. Teachers are on their feet all day long and having the right footwear is essential. It’s even more difficult to find comfortable shoes that are professional and stylish as well.

Luckily, Tieks by Gavrieli offers the complete package: high fashion ballet flats with comfort that goes the distance. I plan to add a new pair of Tieks to my wardrobe before I go back to school this fall and I’m excited to partner with Tieks by Gavrieli and give away a $100 Tieks gift card on the blog this week. I’ll fill you in on all the details of the giveaway at the bottom of this post, but first let me tell you about my love affair with these amazing shoes.

rainbow tieks

All Tieks are made of Italian leather. They are carefully crafted with a hand-stitched leather insole, cushioned back, and signature Tiek blue split rubber sole and stripe along the back. A layer of extra cushioning along the back of the shoe provides additional comfort and prevents the shoe from digging in to the back of the ankle. They also fold up for convenient storage and are great for travel. These wonderful shoes happen to come in every color of the rainbow. Patent leather, printed, and metallic styles are also available (as well as a few vegan options!)

Shipping and returns are always free. Each pair comes packaged in a Tiek blue box with a signature flower on top and a hand-written card inside. It is truly a treat for the eyes and opening a brand new pair of Tieks feels like Christmas.

Lovestruck Tieks

Not only are the shoes amazing, but the customer care is downright out of this world. The first pair I ever purchased did not fit properly so I made arrangements to exchange them for a new pair. I was shocked to receive an email from customer service telling me that I could hold onto the original pair while they shipped a replacement pair. They encouraged me to try both sets on at the same time and simply return the turn the pair I no longer wished to keep after I made an informed decision. I have never heard of a company that lets their customers keep the initial purchase while they compare it to the item they are exchanging it for. Like I said, the customer service is outstanding.

I currently own two pair of Tieks: Ballerina Pink and Lovestruck. Both are super-comfy and are also quite neutral. This summer, I have gotten a lot of use out of my Ballerina Pink Tieks.

The soft pink shade is a great neutral. I often wear the Ballerina Pink on days when I’m trying to soften up my look or go casual chic.

Of course, the Lovestruck Tieks are fabulous. This gorgeous metallic pair is great because it’s a neutral and they can be worn with almost all of my school clothes! I can’t wait to start wearing these more with my fall wardrobe.

Lovestruck Tieks

With the new school year about to begin, I have been saving my pennies to purchase a new pair of Tieks for the school year. I have been scrolling through “The Boutiek” and trying to narrow down my selections. Of course, the soft neutrals caught my eye first. I had to remind myself to keep scrolling even though every single one of these shoes is calling my name. Especially the Rose Gold Glam pair on the far left and the textured metallic Romantic Blush pair near the center.

Neutral Tieks ... so many options!

With fall in mind,  my mind was drawn next to rich, warm shades of brown. How gorgeous are the Mocha Snake Print Tieks in the middle or the Leopard Print pair on the right?

After drooling over the brown pairs for far too long, I remembered that I desperately need a new pair of black flats. My current go-to black flats are not Tieks and my big toe has torn a small hole in the top. It will only get worse with time. I started scouting around on the site in search of the perfect black pair of Tieks.

The three contenders are Obsidian Black, Matte Black and Nude Lace. It’s a seriously tough choice and I need your help to decide!

I am the absolute worst at making decisions.

While I sit here mulling over my shoe options, let me tell you about this amazing giveaway! Tieks has generously agreed to let me give away a $100 gift card toward the purchase of a new pair of fabulous flats for one lucky Kinder Craze reader. Use the Rafflecopter below for your chance to WIN!
